Lamin, playing the drum

Who is your teacher, Lamin Jassey?

I have played music every day of my life for as long as I can remember. I see it as a gift that I am here to share and my dedication to my craft has taken me from my home in The Gambia, around the world and to my current residence of Leeds, UK.

I’ve got an African reggae band called ‘Lamin & Tamala’ (Tamala is the Mandinka word for ‘traveller’) and I’ve also got a roots reggae band called ‘Lamin & African Roots’. I also have extensive experience playing and performing alongside Jazz, Pop, Blues, Rock, Fusion and Gospel: touring around Africa, Europe & the UK.

Here is just one of my compositions: I am playing djembe and singing on this.

I have what I believe to be the best credentials that any teacher can have: a lifetime of friends and students around the world who have successfully and rapidly learnt how to play under my guidance.

I have a genuine passion for the Djembe and love to pass that passion on to as many people as possible! I am very excited to bring you these Djembe lessons online. For the first time ever, my dream of reaching many people around the world is now a reality and YOU CAN NOW LEARN:

  • In the comfort of your own private space
  • When it suits you
  • 24 hours of the day
  • 7 days a week
  • 365 days a year.
  • And Replay and rewatch whichever parts YOU need to, as many times as you want.

Please read on.

Dear Fellow Djembe Player,

You deserve to learn to play some essential rhythms on the Djembe, rapidly whilst having fun. You’ve probably heard certain riffs or grooves in the past, and I’m going to help you get these ‘down’ pretty simply and quickly.

Having not been an ‘internet person’ in the past, I’ve been happy giving my workshops and courses around the world, but the limitation has always been that my students have always had to be in the same place as me. If they aren’t in the area when I’m giving my lesson then they can’t learn, and that means that only a limited number of people, within travelling distance to where I’ve been, have been able to learn under my guidance.

That’s why I’ve created this web site, so that YOU can now discover courses and tuition that will teach you how to play great sounding traditional rhythms, which you can then adapt and improvise with, with the timing, rhythm and magic of a genuine, authentic professional.

No matter whether you are a beginner, an intermediate player or an advanced drummer, this information applies to you. These lessons are packed full of quality step-by-step guides that you can watch and repeat as many times as you want to so that you get results fast!

Learning to play the Djembe

We came up with these online Djembe Tutorials because people were always complaining that they were fed up with not being able to find another teacher that matched my approach and years of genuine experience. They said that although there were some nice people ‘out there’ teaching, they hadn’t come across someone with the (lifetime worth of) experience and heritage I have been graced with.

Not only that, but the Djembe is a practical instrument that I know and believe, anyone can get to grips with if shown correctly. I know because I have helped people who claim to have no rhythm play without hassle!

"The Best Djembe Lessons one could wish for. Superb.” — Jack Irish, Hertfordshire

"I didn't think I'd ever be playing rhythms that sounded complex and competent. Within 4 watches of your Rhumba rhythm I was playing pretty much perfectly. Thank you for giving me a new confidence in my ability and playing skill.” — Nick Prince, London

The lessons are all laid out in an easy to follow, step-by-step method. They are very easy to understand no matter what age you are and I’ve gone to great lengths to ensure that you find learning the Djembe fun!

The Djembe lessons are very practical and although I’ve only just put them online I’m already receiving numerous positive comments from people all over the world every day.

And the good news is that we will be developing the resources on a continuous basis to bring you new rhythms and lessons on a regular basis. And we have something that no-one else offers. We will be going and filming out in my home Country of Gambia in Western Africa and actually playing with my fellow family and country men, genuine master drummers who live and breathe their native musical heritage. I will be giving you the opportunity to learn alongside these masters: virtually, through the internet.

‘Absolutely superb lessons. Thank you so much.” — Hassim Bilal

‘I am playing rhythms that just a month ago I would have never thought possible. Your simple step by step videos are brilliant, and best of all I can repeat the bits I want, when I want. Highly recommended.’ — Paul Swallow

  • An overview of the rhythm
  • The complimentary ‘Cross Rhythm’ (the sister rhythm that a second player will ‘layer’ over the rhythm)
  • Helpful and instructional ‘steps’, breaking the rhythm right down into simple steps which you can replay as many times as you want (and need)
  • Me playing the rhythm for a period of time that you can play over and alongside as if I was in the room with you.

The best way to learn

With my lessons you learn how to play the Djembe from Beginner through Intermediate to Advanced. My lessons are easy to understand and I have put the course together to get you started on the right track to becoming the drummer you’ve always wanted to be. You learn faster because I have made the process fun and totally practical. I have taught children as young as 3 up to elderly people in their 90’s and all of them have got the hang of the rhythms.

There are a number of classic african rhythms I teach you and you will soon be able to improvise on these and adapt them to make your own grooves. If you follow through the series of rhythms and relax whilst learning, you will soon learn all the skills you need to be able to play and improvise over any song you want!

I look forward to giving you the skills to be able to learn to play the rhythms YOU want. That is a priceless skill that will be with you for life!

What others are saying about my lessons

‘Lamin rocks. The lessons are so much fun and as a result I am now running my own little weekly drum circle. Can’t wait to join you in Gambia on one of your holidays Lamin.’ — Carl Sykes

‘I just wanted to say that the drum I brought from you Lamin is amazing. It sounds incredible, it feels solid and it’s highly addictive! It sound’s silly, but it actually ‘feels’ totally authentic too. Thanks for inspiring me on my new found hobby!’ — David Sharp)

why learn with me

  • Step-by-step video lessons - taking you on a journey from beginner to advanced in your djembe playing. You’ll discover the most effective ways to practice so that you master new material quickly, without developing bad habits. Learn to play the djembe smoothly and flawlessly, while cutting your learning time in half!
  • My lifetime of experience - for the first time ever, I am now making my private tuition available via the internet, meaning you can learn as if having one-on-one tuition with me. I could charge over £100 an hour for this: I have played the drum from birth and dedicated my life to teaching and sharing this gift.
  • The ability to learn at your own pace, to your convenience in your own privacy - now you can learn any time (24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year) to fit in with your personal commitments in the privacy of your own space.
  • I’ll guide you through the rhythms step by step: It’s MUCH easier to play a piece once you’ve heard it and can listen and rewatch the tricky parts over and over again as many times as you want.
  • Learn to perform the trickiest of djembe skills: a lifetimes worth of experience in a simple and easy to follow format. It’s comprehensive knowledge at your finger tips!
  • The ability to buy personally selected, authentic, professional Djembes. Over the past decade or so, it’s become ‘fashionable’ to have artefacts from around the world furnishing one’s home. With this there have been numerous so called ‘Djembe’ drums available. The sad truth is that the majority of Djembe drums sold in non-music shops are purely for ornamental use. They are not made for proper playing and tend to be made of poor quality materials by people who don’t play. They are merely for decorative effect. I personally hand select and guarantee a number of djembe drums to sell, that are made by my family and friends in Gambia: professional drummers. Made from Mahogany and Goat Skin and properly tightened to ensure years of quality playing. These drums are the genuine article: the difference between having a 'real deal' or not is as pronounced as the difference of driving a quality car compared to something cheep and cheerful or the difference between eating fast food compared to a slowly prepared and lovingly created meal. Not only does a bad drum make it frustrating and hard to play, but it makes the whole experience much less pleasurable. You need to play a real Djembe to know the difference, and you’ll never look back once you do. Oh, and you instantly improve your sound ten-fold!
  • The option to join me personally to visit my homestead in Gambia and immerse yourself in the native community. I’ve got a small drumming school there called ‘Tan Tan Kounda’ which means ‘House of Drums’. I was bored hearing about how Western opportunists were making very expensive tourist trips to Africa where the holiday makers would stay in a big hotel, eat fish & chips, take photos of animals and rarely meet the local people. Hardly a ‘real taste of Africa!’ I decided to offer a proper African Experience: something more affordable so once a person can arrange their own flight, then I can sort out their accommodation and a REAL African drumming experience. Usually they stay with my family and with the help of my brothers back home, we teach them real African drumming and dance whilst immersing themselves in the local community. This is only open to my students.
  • Priority access to lessons that won’t be made available online to the general public: we are working on bringing you some of the most exciting and authentic lessons available. Filmed in Africa with genuine master drummers - some of these will only be available to those who have already learnt some of the rhythms and if you’re a valued student then we’ll make sure you are informed about them as soon as they are available.

do this, look into the future

Now picture this: It’s 6 months from today (or a lot sooner), and you’ve become the seriously impressive Djembe drummer you’d always dreamed of being - with a lot less effort than you expected.

Even better, you know for a fact that you have both the skills and resources; and you know exactly what to do with them to become an even better musician.

Now, stop and look back on today. Considering that you’ve now become a fantastic Djembe player, what price tag would’ve made it a good investment?

My priority isn’t money: it never has been. We’ve priced my lessons ridiculously fairly to make them (our mission) available to all. I WANT YOU to learn the Djembe, so you too, can then spread the fun and skills you’ve learnt with others. Think what price a series of individual one on one lessons with a top league professional musician would normally cost (over £100 an hour). Then think about how many times you’d have to go back to embed and impress the knowledge and skills as you learn them! With our lessons you pay to learn a rhythm ONCE and then have it to watch it AS MANY TIMES as you want, WHEN you want, and the ability to repeat the parts you need to practice, for as many years as you want and need to.

Although many of my students have told me I could easily and justifiably quadruple the price, I have kept the prices low, so that people from all around the world and of all income levels can benefit. I don’t want these lessons to only be available to people with money. I want everyone to be able to enjoy the Djembe.
